The Southern part of Tanzania has National parks which can give you a variety of experiences from savannah to wetlands and walking safaris to river safaris. The Southern circuit has less flow of tourists comparing to Northern circuit which has the famous Mt. Kilimanjaro or Serengeti National Park.

The Southern Circuit Parks’ include the Selous Game Reserve currently known as Nyerere National Park; Ruaha National Park; Udzungwa Mountains National Park; Mikumi National Park and Kitulo National Park.

Here is the list of few major Southern Circuit Parks:

Nyerere National Park (Selous Game Reserve):

This is one of the most protected areas and largest wildlife reserves of Africa. The largest herd of hippos, elephants, buffaloes, wild dogs and many varieties of birds are seen in Selous Game Reserve.

It has woodlands, grasslands, palms, and excellent water-based wildlife watching. Here the reddish-brown freshwater of river mixes with blue saltwater of Sea. It is also a home for various bird species and dolphins.

The main attraction in the Selous Game Reserve park is; Rufiji River, Acacia savannah and its wetlands. Walking safari and boat safari is the most popular activity in Rufiji River.

The best time to visit here is from June to December to watch hippos playing in the pool and chirping birds by evening.

Ruaha National Park:

This park offers a great ecosystem covering about 40,000 sq km proving home to the largest population of elephants. It also has a wide range of other animals like; Wild dogs, Ostriches, Cheetahs, antelopes and more than 400 different types of birds.

Ruaha has a wild and striking topography, the best place to explore is along the river and following the riverbank.

The best time to visit here is late June through October.

Mikumi National Park:

Mikumi National park is the most accessible part of the southern circuit, you can witness year around wildlife sighting and this is the destination for one who has very less time.

This Park has numerous amount of buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras, and other many animals. You can watch hippos at the pool and do a fine birding.

Mikumi is an educational and research center, among the various projects, ongoing is the field study of yellow baboons, which is one of just a handful of long-term primate study of the continent.

The best time to visit is from January to December, year-round you can visit Mikumi National Park.

Kitulo National Park:

Kitulo National Park is mainly called as ‘The Garden of God’ and botanists call it ‘one of the great floral spectacles of world or Serengeti of flowers. It is the best national park in Tanzania for flora.

It is a rare botanical wonder, as it is home to more than 350+ vascular plants, including 45+ terrestrial orchids and other wildflowers.

The unique flower plants dancing in the tunes of lovely chirping-birds are surely a treat to watch. There is a documented 350 species of wildflowers including lilies and fields of daisies.
