Overview

The currency of Tanzania is a shilling, which is written as TZS. The Tanzanian shilling is symbolized as TSH and can be sub-divided in 100 senti.


  • Tanzania shilling coin was introduced in 1966

  • The denominations of the coins are 5, 20, and 50 senti, and 1 shilling

  • 50, 100, 200, and 500 shillings are denominated now in the country

  • The 50,100, 200, and 300 shillings were introduced respectively in 1996, 1994, 1998, and 2014

  • The banks of Tanzania first introduced notes in 1966 and they also come in denominates of 5, 10, 20, and 100 shillings

  • 1 USD is equivalent to 2,238.90 TZS

  • The orange shilling notes features lion and palm trees picture and the 5,000 purple notes carries the symbol of black rhinoceros
