Serengeti General Information

Overview

Serengeti National Park is situated in Tanzania in the Serengeti ecosystem in the Mara and Simiyu regions. The park spans, 12,000 square miles of grassland plains, savanna, riverine forest, and woodlands and considered as one of the largest national parks of Tanzania.The name Serengeti is actually derived from the local Maasai language which actually means “endless plain”. The park was originally established in the 1920's and officially got reorganization in 1951, however, the true fame Serengeti gained after getting framed in a book and film named “Serengeti Shall Not Die” by Bernhard Grzimek and his son Michael in the 1950s. To the southeast, the famous Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Maswa Game Reserve can be spotted and the northeast holds the Loliondo Game Control Area. To the west lie the Ikorongo and Grumeti Game Reserves.The park holds a good variety of wildlife like blue wildebeests, gazelles, zebras, and buffalo inhabit the region, along with lions, spotted hyenas, and many more.Serengeti is widely famous for the great wildebeest migration that begins in December in the Ngorongoro area of the southern Serengeti of Tanzania, which is a huge tourist attraction.
