Around 750,000 years ago, molten lava erupted through a gap in the Great Rift Valley, forming the Shira volcano. Over time, its cone collapsed, leaving behind the Shira Ridge as part of its caldera rim.
Approximately 50,000 years later, further eruptions gave rise to Mawenzi and Kibo. Kibo, the youngest of the three, has over 250 parasitic cones, which formed between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago on its northwest and southeast slopes.
