Roughly 750,000 years ago molten lava burst through a gap in the surface of the Great Rift Valley creating the Shira volcano. The Shira volcanic cone further collapsed leaving the Shira Ridge as part of its Caldera Rim. Likewise, the eruptions following 50,000 years gave birth to Mawenzi and Kibo. Kibo has more than 250 parasitic cones that were formed between 150,000 and 200,000 years ago towards the northwest and southeast side.
